Description
This is an ORIGINAL example of the second pattern of the "fatigue" duty pants which were issued to GI's during the WWII. According to Charles Lemons" encyclopedic
Uniforms of the US Army Ground Forces 1939-1945
[Volume 4, pages 86-87], these pants were standardized by the Army on 10 March 1943 in light OD#3 and on 30 March 1944 the specification was changed to dark OD#7 fabric. The second pattern differs from the rare first pattern in the bellows pockets on the thighs, rather than the internal "hung" pockets of the first pattern. The second pattern also has a "gas flap" on the right buttoned to an internal "13-Star" metal button, which was intended to prevent vesicant blister gasses from entering the groin area through the fly. Although intended as a work uniform, the HBT clothing of this and other patterns became the combat uniform of GI's in all theaters of operations.
The pants are made of herringbone twill ("HBT") fabric with metal "13-Star" buttons (see image below).
The dark OD shade #7 color of the fabric has faded on the exterior of the pants and might be mistaken for light OD shade #3
. The pants are size 34" waist and 30" inseam, rather than 34-33 as stated on the tag in the waistband (see image of size tag below), with only 1" left to "let down". However, they will fit taller or longer-legged persons by blousing them inside leggings or the two-buckle combat boot. The overall length is 41.5".
The original QM tag in the right pocket is missing.
The pants are in VERY GOOD used condition, except for some fraying at the edges of the pocket flaps and button holes. The fly and pockets of the pants are closed with "13-Star" metal riveted buttons, all of which are present.
Lastly, the pants have the GI's name on a label in the waistband, so the provenance of the pants may be researchable on Ancestry.com or one of the other veterans research websites.
Here's an opportunity for the collector or re-enactor who chooses not to wear reproductions with an actual pair of 2nd pattern pants. The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day (
