    Description
    This is an ORIGINAL
    experimental prototype
for one of the RAREST flying jackets issued to AAF airmen in WWII, the Type F-2 Heated Flying Jacket. Based upon the general design of the "Ike" jacket, which in turn was patterned after the British battle dress jacket, the Type F-2 Flying Jacket was an effort to provide flyers with a flying jacket that was both stylish and practical. Since large numbers of flyers were being shot down over the Continent and making their way as "Kriegies" to Oflags and Stalag Lufts, there was a practical need to supply downed airmen with flight clothing which would be presentable while in captivity, so they could at least look like airmen and retain some self-dignity. The result was the Type F-2 Heated Flying Jacket.  According to the late Glen Sweeting's
    Combat Flying Clothing
[Page 34]  the F-2 Jacket was standardized on August 13, 1943, shortly after the manufacture of this prototype.  The eventual F-2 differed in that the experimental version didn't have a removable heated lining, which was likely unneeded in captivity and made the jacket more comfortably to wear. Additionally, the experimental jacket had a zippered front, rather than the button-front of the F-2, which was probably eliminated as a manufacturing simplification and cost savings.
The jacket is constructed of the same green "wool elastique" gabardine twill as an officer's four-pocket blouse with "bi-swing" gussets behind the shoulders.  The jacket has two buttoned patch pockets on the lower front torso, which also have "side-entry hand pockets" beneath them.   There is a small pocket on the right rear hip, the purpose of which appears to be to prevent the connection with the heated trousers from snagging on the interior of the aircraft, similar to the lower right front pocket of the F-2 jacket. Lastly, there are two buttoned adjustment tabs at the waistband (see images below). The jacket is in VERY GOOD+ used condition with three moth nips on the collar, several snags or nips on the left back and left sleeve and some small white spots on the lower right sleeve.
The jacket still retains the original AAF tag of the manufacturer General Electric sewn at the lower right waist band.
While the jacket retains the female plug outlets at the gold-buttoned cuffs for the heated gloves, the main wiring plug at the waistband has been removed (see images below).
Here's an opportunity for the advanced AAF jacket collector or re-enactor to obtain a rare prototype for the F-2 flight jackets of WWII.  As usual, the buyer will have my unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day (
not the 14-days that they insert in my listings without my consent
) right of inspection and return/refund privilege, excluding postage.
