Description
This is an ORIGINAL and RARE VARIANT in COTTON KHAKI TWILL of the classic Type A-4 flying suit (or "Pilot's Suit" as the AAF termed it) issued to pilots and other aircrewman before and during WWII. I bought this flight suit in 2002 at the Dallas Militaria Show, which made a single appearance at the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas after the owner of the Great Western Militaria Show relocated it from the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona and a single appearance at the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2001. While the suit may have been an experimental type, I suppose it could also been tailor-made to order at one of the many uniform sellers near the air fields in Texas. I tend toward the conclusion that it was made for the Air Corps due the use of "bar tacks" at the seam corners, which require a special bar tacking sewing machine, which were only available to major government clothing contractors of the WWII period.
My Dad wore an A-4 flight suit (albeit not in cotton khaki) at Victory Field in Vernon, Texas while taking his primary flight training there. This is a unique "summer" version of the suit, which rather than being made of the usual brown wool gabardine twill, is made out of khaki cotton twill fabric with an angled right chest pocket and TWO flapped THIGH pockets (see close-up images below). This suit is in VERY GOOD overall condition and shows no soiling despite its khaki color. There is no QM tag is present in the neck or pockets, but the suit is a medium size 36-38. The suit measures as follows: 20.5" across the chest; 22" sleeves; 18" across the shoulders; 16.5" at the waist; an inseam of 30"; and an overall length of 60". All of the Talon metal zippers at the chest, sleeves and pant legs are in functional working condition. The snaps are unusual in that the caps are brass, but the male and female parts are white metal of some kind. Also rather than being riveted together, the snaps appear to use something akin to the tack buttons on Marine utilities.
Here's an opportunity for the advanced Air Corps collector to obtain a rare variant of the Type A-4 flight suit for his collection. The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day (
not the 14-days that they insert in my listings without my consent
) right of inspection and return/refund privilege, excluding postage.
