Comments: * Proof on large paper. - Karl Otto Speth (1890-1925) was a German artist from Tettnang in the Allgäu who died early. - His talent for drawing came to the fore as a schoolboy. He received his first apprenticeship after graduating from high school on a study trip to Italy with an old restorer. In 1913 he began his studies at the Munich Academy of Arts in Gundahl-Becker's drawing class, interrupted by his service as a soldier in the First World War. In June 1916 he was released injured and continued his artistic work. In March 1919 he married his beloved wife Maria Kiesling, but a few months later he had to go to hospital with tuberculosis, which he could not leave until his death in 1925. The style of his work was influenced by contemporary modern artistic trends (Böcklinkreis et al.), He created a very individual style full of expressive joie de vivre and sensuality. Due to his short creative period, his oeuvre is naturally not that great. So far, approx. 100 bookplates and other odd jobs, approx. 15 etched portraits, a number of free graphics, as well as a number of drawings, sketches and a few paintings. Even with his first graphic commissioned works (1913) for bookplates etc. his talent was quickly recognized and in 1916 Richard Braungart dedicated a larger, remarkably ambitious article to him in the "Yearbook for Exlibris, Book Art and Applied Graphics". Nevertheless, Speth is only known to a few (especially bookplate collectors) today. With the tragic early death we lost a great hopeful talent with a sparkling and spontaneous artistic work full of graceful joie de vivre and the senses. - From the artist's estate. - In perfect condition.
