He also studied in Paris and Italy. In 1917 he received the Rome Prize and in 1918 the Bear Prize of the Berlin Academy. He became a member of the Vienna Secession in 1919 and was its president from 1922 to 1926 and 1931 to 1935. In 1921 he became professor of graphics at the Vienna Women's Academy. He held the same position from 1925 to 1965 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. From 1936 he headed the master school for graphics there. As rector, he led the fortunes of the academy for years.
