From 1903 to 1909 he studied at the Leipzig Academy, first in the department of applied graphics with Georg Belwe and Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens, then in the department of graphic techniques with Schelter and Buthold and finally in the department of painting and graphics with Rentzsch. He then studied in the teaching facility of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts, where he was Emil Doepler's master class. From 1912 to 1945 he taught as a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin. From 1948 to 1952 he worked as a lecturer at the painting and drawing school in Zwickau and has been its director since 1952.
