"Hein's artistic training began with an apprenticeship as a theater painter at the applied arts school in Hamburg and at the Karlsruhe art school. From 1890 to 1905 he was a teacher here, his residence was in the Augustenburg in Grötzingen. There he made many pictures and illustrations about his homeland. He was the romantic among the Grötzingen painters and the creator of well-known fairy tale pictures. He also wrote poems and novels. In 1900 he turned down an offer to Magedburg. The Karlsruhe art students then organized a torchlight procession. He turned down another call to Berlin, whereupon he was appointed professor.
